Reading
Learning to read- Phonics
In Nursery, children are first taught pre-phonics skills to ensure they have secure foundations to be ready to learn to read, when they enter Reception. Once children are ready, they then begin to learn to recognise single letter sounds following the Read Write Inc scheme, usually in the Summer term.
In Reception, children begin learning to recognise the set 1 single letter sounds following the Read Write Inc scheme, as soon as they start in September. They also learn how to blend these sounds together to read words and then sentences. Please see the phonics section of our website for more information.
Growing a love of reading
In the EYFS, we know how important it is to promote and grow a love of reading. Reading and high quality books are embedded in everything that we do. Children are exposed to a variety of texts throughout each day.
In Reception, we teach Literacy through a three-week cycle using texts as drivers, which allows our children to get to know the texts really well. Children are taught adventurous vocabulary from the book and listen to the story each day. The children then use the texts to act out, retell, create story maps, take part in first hand experiences and write about the characters and the plot.
The children learn the wider curriculum of Maths, Personal Social and Emotional Development, Understanding the World, Expressive Art and Design through a separate high quality driver text.
Reading at home
Read Write Inc Book Bag Books
In Reception, once children have been taught to recognise the sounds in school and they can blend the sounds together to read a simple word, the children will begin to bring home a Read Write Inc book and a Book Bag Book. These are books for children to read to a parent or carer to practise applying the phonics skills they are learning in school. Please send your child’s books in to school every day to enable staff to change them regularly.
